Description

The Leo Triplet is a group of interacting galaxies in the Constellation Leo about 35 million light years away.  It consists of the spiral galaxies M65 (top right), M66 (lower right), and NGC 3628 (edge-on, lower left).  M65 and M66 were discovered by Charles Messier on March 1st, 1780.  NGC 3628 went undetected until William Herschel discovered it on April 8, 1784.  The stars and dust in NGC 3628 orbit in opposite directions, indicating a possibly recent merger with another galaxy.

Taken with RGB data.  R, G, and B masters integrated together for a synthetic luminance and then applied to the RGB image.
